Kitchen Remodel Timeline: How Long Does a Kitchen Renovation Take in New Jersey?

One of the first questions homeowners ask us is how long their kitchen remodel will take. The honest answer is that it depends on the scope. A cosmetic refresh moves fast. A full gut with new layout, new plumbing, and custom cabinets takes real time.

Here is a realistic timeline for a full kitchen remodel in New Jersey, based on the projects we run across Somerset County and surrounding Central New Jersey communities. If you are also wondering what it costs, see our guide to kitchen remodeling in Somerset County.

Design and selections: 2 to 4 weeks

This is where everything starts. We measure the space, talk through how you use the kitchen, and work out the layout. Then you pick the big items: cabinets, countertops, flooring, appliances, fixtures, and lighting.

This phase takes as long as the decisions take. Homeowners who come in with a clear idea of what they like move through it in a couple of weeks. If you are still torn between two cabinet styles, that is fine, but the clock does not start on ordering anything until the selections are locked.

Do not skip this step or rush it. Almost every delay we see later comes from a decision that was never really made.

Permits: 1 to 4 weeks

Most New Jersey towns require permits for a kitchen remodel that touches electrical, plumbing, or structural work. Your town reviews the plans, and the timeline depends on their workload. Some towns turn permits around in a week. Others take a month.

We handle the permit application for you. The main thing to know is that construction cannot start until the permits are issued, so this runs in the background while cabinets are being ordered.

Cabinet and material lead times: 4 to 12 weeks

This is usually the longest wait in the whole project, and it is mostly out of anyone’s hands. Stock cabinets ship fastest. Semi-custom lines take several weeks. Fully custom cabinetry takes the longest.

Countertops get templated after the cabinets are installed, and fabrication adds another week or two after that. Appliances can also have lead times, so order them early and store them until install day.

We schedule the demolition around the cabinet delivery date. Starting demo before the cabinets are confirmed is how kitchens end up torn apart for months.

Construction: 3 to 6 weeks

For a typical full kitchen remodel, the build itself runs three to six weeks. Here is the rough order of operations:

  1. Demolition and prep
  2. Framing changes, if the layout changed
  3. Rough plumbing and electrical
  4. Inspections
  5. Drywall, then paint or primer
  6. Cabinet installation
  7. Countertop templating, then installation
  8. Tile backsplash and flooring
  9. Fixture, appliance, and lighting installation
  10. Final inspections and punch list

Smaller kitchens with no layout changes can finish closer to three weeks. Larger kitchens with walls coming down run longer.

What causes delays

The most common delays we see:

Change orders mid-project. Swapping the tile after it is already ordered restarts the lead time clock.

Hidden conditions. Old plumbing, outdated wiring, or water damage behind the walls only shows up once demolition starts. We fix it right, but it adds days.

Inspection scheduling. Your town sets the inspection calendar, not us. A missed inspection window can push the schedule by several days.

Backordered materials. If one item is stuck in transit, we work around it when we can, but some steps cannot move forward without it.

How to keep your project on schedule

Make every selection before demolition starts. Respond to questions the same day when we ask. And build a small buffer into your own plans, especially if you are hosting a holiday or listing the house.

A realistic total for a full kitchen remodel in New Jersey is usually 3 to 5 months from first design meeting to final walkthrough. That sounds like a lot, but most of it is ordering and waiting. The disruptive part, the actual construction, is measured in weeks.
