A bathroom is the smallest room in the house and somehow the one with the most decisions per square foot. Homeowners always ask how long it will take. Here is a practical timeline for a full bathroom remodel in New Jersey, based on the bathroom projects we build across Central New Jersey.
Design and selections: 1 to 2 weeks
We measure the space, talk through what is not working now, and plan the new layout. Then you pick the tile, vanity, fixtures, shower or tub setup, lighting, and paint.
Bathrooms move faster than kitchens in this phase because there are fewer pieces, but the same rule applies: nothing gets ordered until the selections are locked. Changing the tile after it ships restarts the clock.
Permits: 1 to 4 weeks
Most New Jersey towns require permits when a bathroom remodel touches plumbing or electrical. The town reviews the plans on their schedule. Some turn it around in a week, others take a month.
We handle the permit application for you. This runs in the background while materials are being ordered, so it rarely adds time on its own.
Material lead times: 2 to 8 weeks
Tile, vanities, and fixtures usually arrive faster than kitchen cabinets, but custom or special-order pieces still take time. Vanities with stone tops, custom shower glass, and certain tile lines can stretch the wait.
We schedule demolition around material delivery. Tearing out a working bathroom before the new tub or vanity is confirmed is how families end up without a shower for weeks.
Construction: 2 to 4 weeks
A typical full bathroom remodel runs two to four weeks of active work:
- Demolition and prep
- Rough plumbing and electrical
- Inspections
- Cement board, waterproofing, and drywall
- Tile: floors first, then shower walls
- Vanity, toilet, and fixture installation
- Shower glass, mirrors, and lighting
- Paint, caulk, and final punch list
A hall bathroom with no layout changes lands closer to two weeks. A master bath with a moved toilet or a custom-tiled walk-in shower runs longer.
What causes delays
Hidden water damage. Bathrooms hide leaks. Subfloor rot around the toilet or tub shows up after demolition, and we fix it right before moving on.
Change orders. Swapping fixtures mid-project means reordering and rescheduling.
Inspection scheduling. The town sets the calendar. A missed window can push things several days.
Custom shower glass. It gets measured after the tile is in, and fabrication takes one to two weeks. Plan for it.
What drives the cost
Size matters less than scope. Moving plumbing costs more than keeping it. Tile labor is the biggest line item in most bathrooms: a fully tiled walk-in shower costs real money in labor alone. Fixture quality, vanity choice, and whether the subfloor needs repair round out the budget.
Every bathroom is different, which is why we price from your actual space, not a national average.
